A surprise had been organised for me this week. Our Son and Daughter-in-Law, Drew & Dawn had arranged for Nikki Wheetman, an experienced and competent Falconer, to call in and see us with her new acquisition; the 5 week old Barn Owlet, Diva. I have been following Diva’s progress on Facebook and I have met Nikki with two of her other birds Echo (Diva’s sister) and Chutney the Bengal Eagle Owl along with Clive Britcher and one of his birds, Benji, the Little Owl.
I was absolutely thrilled about this and have been excited by the prospects of meeting Diva all week. So when Nikki called in after setting up Phoenix Rescue’s stand at The East Anglian Game and Country Fair at the Norwich Showground, it rather felt like Christmas.
When Nikki walked in with Diva in a kitten’s bed I think there was a collective aah from Jan, Dawn, Drew and myself. For the best part of 2 hours we were amazed at Diva’s ability to eat and to be such an adorable Owlet and with Nikki’s knowledge of Owls and Falconry. There are some videos on our YouTube Channel of the evening as we took it in turns to feed her and just marvel at the privilege of having such an incredible bird in our midst.
The evening finished with another invitation to go out with Nikki and to fly Chutney the Eagle Owl that we met as a rather mischievous Owlet last year. I just hope I’m brave enough to take up this second chance offer.
Very big thanks to Nikki and Diva for giving up their time and to Drew and Dawn for making it possible.
Keep your eyes peeled and good spotting.
