Just recently we have had 2 Starlings in the garden on a pretty regular basis and judging by the way they load their beaks up with fat and mealworms they are parents feeding a brood somewhere.
Today they were joined by 15 other Starlings who stayed most of the day. As I watched them I was amazed at how many worms they were catching in our small lawn. Then some of them discovered the fatballs and fat block and then the pond. They spent the rest of the day going from one to another normally finishing up in the pond to have jolly good bath before going back to the feeders to start again. It was great fun to watch them.
These Starlings didn’t look like new fledglings they all had yellow beaks and fine plumage so even if they had been an early brood they would have done well to get their adult plumage by now. I think they were adult birds who were passing through and just happened to find our garden. Even the Rooks and Jackdaws didn’t get a look in today.
There is a video of some of their antics on our YouTube Channel and these pics are frame grabs from that video.
All being well and hopefully being spared, we’re off to Lackford Lakes tomorrow, it is near Bury St. Edmunds and run by The Suffolk Wildlife Trust. We’ve been there a few times but they’ve done some amazing work there since our last visit.
Keep your eyes peeled and good spotting.
