We left home at Watton, Norfolk just after 6am and we arrived at the Travelodge in Falkirk just after 4pm. It was a pretty dire journey as it was quite misty and overcast but when we crossed over the border into Scotland it got worse. Most of the time we were in the clouds with varying amounts of rain from drizzle to much heavier.
We hadnt seen very much at all but it was here that we saw the first of four Buzzards. Nothing unusual in that, because Buzzards are quite common in Scotland. The first was eating some carrion beside the road and as we approached it lazily flew up into a roadside tree. The next two we saw landed in roadside trees and the fourth was the strangest of all. It was standing on a roundabout on a very busy road from the M9 into Falkirk. I have to say it looked majestic and totally unbothered by the unending stream of traffic around the roundabout.
The next two sightings were a bit unexpected and truly magnificent. It was here that I was hoping to show you a couple of pictures but they steadfastly refused to transfer to the iPad; I guess it must be something to do with ios 8.1 because when I tried it a couple of weeks ago it was fine.
Anyway, I digress, they were the Kelpies, two magnificent statues of the Scoittish mythological creatures that live in the rollers of the sea. Two superb Horses heads at Grangemouth. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised because in my miniscule brain I thought they were further up the East Coast. So I was quite excited that we were spending the first night just four miles away from the Kelpies. Extraordinary really, the Angel of the North in the morning and the Kelpies in the evening.
I was a bit disapponted that I couldnt get very close but we did get some pictures and a video that Ill post when we get back. We saw the Kelpies in the dark so we saw them lit up; white from one angle and from another, red, to mark Remembrance Sunday and the Royal British Legion Poppy appeal.
Tomorrow we set off for our Island, weather permitting. Hopefully if the weather is brighter tomorrow we might get one last look at the Kelpies before we go through the beautiful Highlands of Scotland but were not too hopeful because the weather forecast is pretty awful, but well see.
Just in case youre wondering on my portable keyboard there is no apostrophes!
Keep your eyes peeled and good spotting, hopefully there will be an entry every day this week.
