Norwich – Watton

A Few Hours Poodling About Between Norwich And Watton – Thursday 13th November 2014

After a morning at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital I was glad of a diversion from our normal route home to take my mind off things. I’m not sure if Jan fully understands how these things tie me up in knots for at least two days before they happen and of course during the appointment. Although today’s appointment was quite positive there was still some pain and humiliation to go through and certainly there will be another visit for a scan.

I always enjoy reading Paul Newport’s blog: The Breckland Birder, which can be found here:

Paul, lives in Watton and is a fantastic photographer and we have learnt a lot about our area from his blog. One of my particular interests are rivers and recently Paul has had some lovely shots of Grey Wagtails at Bawburgh. As we pass nearby to this village when we travel to and from Norwich I was pleased when Jan agreed to take a detour on our way home.

Although the day was very overcast and grey it was lovely to see the River Yare at Bawburgh, there were a few people fishing on it near the Mill. The river is quite small here compared to its size through Norwich and beyond and I’m sure we will return to it at some point in the future.

We continued through the back roads through Marlingford where there is another Mill, although I’m not sure it is a working Mill. This is another place I’d like to return to. We rejoined the main road at Barford where we very quickly saw two Kestrels hunting in roadside fields and a Buzzard soaring over some woodlands.

Continuing onto Carbrooke on the main road we took another detour through the back roads towards Shipdham, seeing a Hare on the way, before joining the main Dereham to Watton Road. We saw another two Kestrels along this road before returning home. At least our diversions had taken my mind off of things.

Keep your eyes peeled and good spotting.
